Born on June 2, 1929, in West Nyack, New York, Ruth was the daughter of Frank and Anna Allen. After graduating from Congers High School and The Scudder School, she built a life of dedication to both her family and her work. She met the love of her life, Peter Varriale, while vacationing at Lake George, New York, and they married on May 12, 1956, at St. Paul Catholic Church in Congers, New York. In 1967, they moved from their home in Saddle Brook, New Jersey to settle in Houston, Texas, to raise their family.
Ruth served for more than two decades as an administrator for the Spring Branch Independent School District. She also worked at Joske’s Department Store and Lederle Pharma.
Ruth will be remembered for her spunk, sense of humor, and appreciation for good food. She loved swimming, and proudly earned medals in the Senior Olympics. She had a passion for tennis, gardening, traveling, the Houston Astros and especially for bringing her family together. Holidays and family gatherings were her favorite times—occasions filled with laughter, food, and sporting activities, which she fully participated in well into her 80’s. Her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren will always cherish these memories of time spent at her home. She developed many long-lasting friendships throughout her life and enjoyed social activities with Lifeline and other groups.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Peter Varriale; her parents; and her brothers Frank (Betty), Robert (Leona), Jack (Rachel), and James.
Ruth is survived by her five loving children: Paul (Connie) Varriale, Marie (George) Bold, Rita (Jeff) Sulma, Anne (Tommy) Seeley, and John Varriale; as well as 10 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and her sister-in-law Lillian Allen.
The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to all of Ruth's caregivers, especially those at New Light Hospice, Memorial Oaks Assisted Living, Brookdale at Home, and Amada Senior Living, who provided compassionate support during her final days.
