Stella Marie Kocian

Stella Marie Kocian, known to most as Marie, passed away peacefully on February 27, 2025, at the age of 96. She lived a full life, filled with love, laughter, and a spark that could light up any room. Born on December 30, 1928, Marie called Houston, Texas, home for most of her life.

Marie worked in the food service industry until she was 93 years old. She was a true "hoot" with a spark that could capture anyone's attention. A God-fearing woman, Marie loved with all her heart. She had a fierce bark, but no bite to back it up. She was loved by many, though possibly feared by more—only because of that bark. If she had trouble remembering someone’s name, she would give them a nickname, and they just went along with it. She always had an old wives’ tale to solve a problem, one of which was to put a toothpick between your teeth while cutting onions to prevent burning eyes.

Marie’s greatest accomplishment was raising her son, Michael, who gave her so much more family to love. She was blessed to live long enough to see not just two grandchildren, but six great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, and many others whom she had the privilege of babysitting and helping raise. Marie was also a Godmother to more children than most. She cared for and taught these children in ways that cannot be fully captured in any list.

Marie enjoyed quilting and crocheting. She loved playing gin rummy and did so with multiple generations of family, even teaching the younger ones how to play. She cooked for many over the years, both privately and publicly. While her cooking will always be remembered, it was her meatloaf that was considered out of this world and held the top spot in everyone’s hearts.

Marie was an amazing daughter, sister, mother, and granny. She leaves behind countless cherished memories and experiences that will continue to bless all who knew her.

Marie is preceded in death by her husband, Jerry Frank Kocian, and her brother, Rance Moore. She is survived by her son, Michael Maneely (and wife Theresa), her grandson Rhett (and his church family), granddaughter Avriel (and husband Richard), six great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, and two sisters, Evelyn (Virginia) Kennerly and Betty Clay.

A graveside service for Stella Marie will be held Monday, March 3, 2025 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Forest Park Lawndale Funeral Home, 6900 Lawndale Street, Houston, TX 77023.
