John I have placed your mother-in-law on my evening prayer list.  May he bring peace to the family In Jesus Name.

I have many beautiful memories of times spent with my mother in law. As I was so blessed to have the opportunity to travel across this  country with her and Dee Dee and my mother. So much laughter was shared with her and my mother. From Boston Mass. to San Diego California to Louisiana and many other places in this great country.  She found the beauty in all of Gods creation. And in the simplest things of this world, and she found humor all around her.
   One special memory that stands out of our many travels together was a rest break on the side of the highway on the way to California in the desert of  Arizona, while taking a break from driving, standing and admiring the vastness of the desert she noticed the beautiful rocks on the desert floor. so many .
 She picked one up and held it and studied it a while and then announced that this rock is a good rock . It would make a very good base to rest in the center of the pot to form the first circle when building a tamale stack . 
 after her observation,Dee Dee and mother also began to pick out their own beautiful rock.
  This memory sums up to me what I believe to describe the soul  of my mother in law, In  that she always looked for the good and usefulness in all of Gods creation.
  and no matter how long you may spend in the desert we all serve a purpose in this world .
 Now God has picked her to be a much needed angel in heaven.



We express our deepest condolences.As we all know that the life of the departed is placed in the memories of the living,the  love we feel in life keeps people alive beyond their time, Anyone who has given love will always live on in another’s heart. Your mother was a lady and a lady always knows when to leave. My God bless the  Rios family.








I will remember my grandmother-in-law Susie Rios as very loving, energetic and passionate.  Grandma Rios hosted holiday parties from her apartment and cooked more tamales than everyone together could possibly eat, and even sent frozen tamales with my mother-in-law when she came to visit us in the NorthEast if we could not make it to a family gathering.  Even though she had a lot of family members to keep track of, she remembered us and sent us greeting cards for all the major holidays and our birthdays – usually even calling us on the day of our birthdays.  It was special to have Grandma Rios come to Boston for John’s and my wedding in 2010, as well as support us at ballroom competitions in Baton Rouge, Washington DC and Baltimore.   
There is still one day in May 2016 with Grandma Rios that I will always remember.  We went to the Houston Galleria Mall with my mother-in-law, my husband John, and my son Hoon who was just 2.5 years old at the time.  We walked around many shops and ended up near the indoor ice skating rink.  Grandma Rios has seen me perform in figure skating shows, and Hoon had been a spectator at ice skating rinks plenty of times, but I was insistent that Hoon wasn’t going to learn ice skating, thus I never took him on the ice with me prior to this day.  Grandma Rios said, “I want to see my great-grandson skate,” and nothing could dissuade her from this idea that she would see Hoon skate.  Hoon loves performing for an audience, and he enjoys acting like a grown-up and doing whatever his parents do.  So very reluctantly, I put on rental skates (which is something I would almost never otherwise do, since I own figure skates and bring them to places where I anticipate that I will be skating) and rented skates for Hoon and let Grandma Rios watch her great-grandson skate.  Nowadays, Hoon relishes going to the ice rink as if it was his playground, and we can thank Grandma Rios for it.

I remember Ms. Rios kind spirit, her smile and her laugh which was sincere and simple. She was kind to my mother Berenice Gonzalez and they had some good relationship with one another.
