On June 26, Walter C. Bullitt (89) passed away peacefully in the company of his family following a recent struggle with Alzheimer’s disease. Walter was born on October 27, 1933 in Houston to Henry and Anne Bullitt. He graduated from Stephen F. Austin High School in 1951 where he was an outstanding member of the track team. He earned a BBA from the University of Houston and was a naval submariner veteran (USS Quillback). A lifelong commercial real estate appraiser, Walter held professional designations from the Appraisal Institute and the Counselors of Real Estate. He lived for many years in Spring Valley, Texas, where he served on the Planning and Zoning Committee and earned the Spring Valley Citizen of the Year award in 1990.
Walter traveled the world with family and friends including a family trip to England and several river boat tours in Europe. He enjoyed photography and recorded these trips through numerous memorable photographs. An avid reader, Walter enjoyed the writing of modern and ancient philosophers, and he loved classical music, particularly the compositions of Baroque and Classical composers. As a founding member of the Texas River Rogues, Walter loved canoeing and rafting throughout Texas including on the Rio Grande, the Pecos, and the Guadalupe Rivers. Though he had many pastimes, his greatest love was spending time with family and friends at the country house in Fayetteville, where the family spent many memorable Christmases.
Walter is survived by his wife of 65 years, Kathryn (Bush) Bullitt; daughter, Lynell and son-in-law John Grounds; son, Steven Bullitt; sister, Carol Ann (Bullitt) Simmons; and grandchildren, Elizabeth and Jennifer Grounds. He was preceded in death by his daughter Valerie Bullitt.
