Warren J. Schulin (90) was born in Houston, Texas on January 23, 1935, to Ivan Schulin Sr. and Eva L. Schulin. He attended Christ the King School, Hogg Jr. High, and Jeff Davis High School, leaving in the tenth grade to join the U.S. Navy in 1952, where he earned his GED. While home on leave, he married his sweetheart, Lola Joyce (Piper) Schulin on December 5, 1952. Everyone said it wouldn’t last, but 72 years later, they proved them wrong.
Warren and Joyce loved dancing, fishing, and shrimping. In 1969, they built a fishing camp on Bolivar Peninsula where they created lifelong memories with friends. They also enjoyed trips to the casinos a few times a year.
Warren was a man of many hobbies. He enjoyed gardening, tinkered with small engines, repaired almost anything, and woodworking where he built countless porch swings in his backyard woodshop, more for joy than profit. His trade was printing, beginning his career at the Houston Press in 1958 and retiring in 1997 after 32 years at Universal Printing Company, where he worked alongside his brother, Ivan.
Warren was a proud member of the American Legion for over 65 years (Post 560). Known for his generosity, humor, and strong opinions, he never met a stranger and was always ready to lend a hand, never expecting anything in return.
He is survived by his loving wife of 72 years, Lola Joyce Schulin; son Donald Schulin (Doris); daughter Debra Buttram (Larry); grandchildren Chad Schulin (Meredith), Casey Schulin (Melanie), Travis Buttram (Traci), Tyler Schulin (Lexi), Cody Schulin (Briana), and Allison Buttram (Alec); great-grandchildren Bentley, Mason, Liam, Casen, Ellie, and Tatum; brother Ivan Schulin Jr. (Liz); sister Barbara Smith and many extended family members.
He was preceded in death by his son Larry Wayne Schulin (Cynthia), brother Johnny Schulin, and sister Jacquelyn Wolfe.
Warren will be deeply missed. He lived a full life and always said: “Don’t say I’m in a better place when I die, this place may not be perfect, but I really like it here.”
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Shriners Hospitals for Children or St. Jude Children’s Hospital, two causes close to his heart.
Pallbearers honoring Warren's memory are Chad Schulin, Casey Schulin, Travis Buttram, Tyler Schulin, Cody Schulin, and Allison Buttram.
