Col. (Ret) Douglas “Sonny” Cox, Jr., 83 of Decatur, AL passed away on Tuesday, February 27, 2018 at Summerford Nursing Home in Falkville, AL. Sonny was born in Birmingham, AL on January 16, 1935. He is preceded in death by his parents, Douglas Cox, Sr. and Gladys Nichols Cox; wife, Ann Baxter Cox; granddaughter, Amber Cox.
He is survived by his wife, Karen Sheley Cox; two sons, Rick Cox (Debbie), Randy Cox; four stepchildren, Jason, Jody, Kimberly, Ivy; two grandchildren, Blayne and Cole Cox; numerous step-grandchildren.
Col. Cox was a Retired Colonel in the United States Army Reserve with 20+ years of service to our country. Sonny went on to form a successful HVAC company, Cox Corporation located in Huntsville, AL. He was awarded the prestigious ABC Eagle Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016 from the North Alabama Associated Builders & Contractors Association for his outstanding contribution to the building industry in North Alabama. Sonny enjoyed cheering for his beloved Auburn Tigers Football Team, “War Eagle”, playing golf and watching NASCAR.
You may visit with the family on Sunday, March 4, 2018 from 2:00pm until 3:00pm at Valhalla Funeral Home. Funeral Services, conducted by Bro. Marvin McCormick, will begin at 3:00pm in Valhalla’s Chapel. Interment, with military honors will immediately follow services at Valhalla Memory Gardens in the Garden of Valor.
