Rev. Evelyn Mason Brodeur, 91, of Huntsville, passed away on Tuesday, December 2, 2014 at Crestwood Medical Center. She was born August 12, 1923 in Augusta, Georgia.
Evelyn was an active member of First Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Huntsville, Alabama. She sang in the choir; was an Elder and chair of several committees and President of CP Women, both in the local church and in Robert Donnell Presbytery and later for the entire Denomination. She also became Convention President of the National Cumberland Presbyterian Women’s work and served all of these with distinction.
Evelyn was a member of the Executive Committee General Assembly. She was also Vice-Moderator of the General Assembly and was active in Robert Donnell Presbytery.
Evelyn’s work led her to become a candidate for ordination to the Gospel ministry. She entered the Program of Alternate Studies (PAS) and was ordained in 1985. Her attendance in PAS led her to work in that program for three directore, Dr. William Rustenhaven, Reverend Norlan Scrudder and Dr. Thomas Campbell. After graduation and ordination she served as Pastor of Big Cove, CP Church and was interim pastor for several others churches in Madison County.
At PAS, Evelyn did everything to assist the work. The School was always 16 days in the Summer and hosted as many as 60 students. Evelyn volunteered to enroll each student, arrange for their housing, keep class schedules and always had the coffee pot on from 5:00 AM until midnight.
Evelyn and her husband Bill raised orchids and furnished them for all local church services, for all denominational events such as General Assembly and CPW (now CPWM) Convention, where she provided corsages for all officers of the Convention.
Rev. Evelyn Brodeur was preceded in death by her husband, William D. Brodeur, Sr. Survivors include four sons, William D. Brodeur, Jr. (Carol), David M. Brodeur (Debra), Robert L. Brodeur (Barbara) and James L. Brodeur (Kathy) and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The family will be present to receive friends Saturday, December 6, 2014 from 10:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. The funeral service will commence at 11:30 a.m., with Rev. Norlan Scrudder, Rev. Ron Bynum and Dr. Tom Campbell officiating. All services will be at Valhalla Funeral Home, with entombment at Valhalla Memory Gardens.
Memorial contributions may be made to Evelyn Brodeur Endowment Fund for Memphis Theological Seminary; Evelyn Brodeur Endowment Diamond Membership Fund to CPWM and Trinity Alzheimer Adult Day Care in Huntsville, Alabama.
