Jean was born on November 3, 1932 in Memphis, TN. Her family later moved to St. Louis, MO where she met the love of her life, John Edwards, and the two were married on March 31, 1952. From 1958 until 1981, she accompanied John throughout his prestigious 22-year military career as an Army wife, and full-time mother to their four children. Through his service to our country, they traveled to numerous duty locations across the US as well as to several international destinations including Korea, Japan, and Germany.
Jean worshipped at the Bicentennial Chapel on Redstone Arsenal where she regularly attended Sunday school and was an active member of the Protestant Women of the Chapel (PWOC). Those closest to Jean received countless blessings through her tender heart, her legendary cooking, her sharp wit, and her even sharper sense of style. She enjoyed playing cards, listening to Gospel music, and spending time with her family. Jean loved God, and instilled that same love for God in her family.
Jean was preceded in death by John Roland Edwards, her husband of 61 years, and her son Van Edwards. She is survived by her children, Hubert Edwards, Lemuel Edwards, and Melanie Johnson (Larry); seven grandchildren, Jimmy Johnson (Carey), Ilan-Mitchell Edwards, Jamal Edwards, Nicholas Edwards, Taylor Harris (Kyle), Kennedy Edwards, and Alana Edwards; and seven great-grandchildren, Alaizaih Calhoun, Zaylin-Mitchell Edwards, Elijah “El-J” Johnson, Zayda Johnson, Ezra Edwards, Nolan Edwards, and Elynah Jean Harris.
Jean also leaves behind countless friends, well-wishers, loved-ones, neighbors, church members, admirers, and witnesses whose lives were touched by her tender spirit.
