Jimmy Ray Akins, 73, passed away peacefully on December 27, 2025, in Huntsville, Alabama. Born on April 19, 1952, in Scottsboro, Alabama, Jimmy lived a life marked by service, dedication, and quiet strength.
In 1971, Jimmy enlisted in the United States Army, beginning a distinguished military career that spanned over two decades. Rising to the rank of Sergeant First Class, he served with honor in Germany, Korea, and across the United States. His commitment to duty and country was unwavering throughout his 22 years of service. After retiring from the Army in 1993, Jimmy continued his dedication to public service by joining the United States Postal Service. He worked diligently for another 24 years before retiring in 2017.
Jimmy's devotion extended beyond his professional life. In 1992, he became a member of Winchester Road Baptist Church. Though he preferred to serve quietly behind the scenes, his contributions were deeply valued by his church family. Whether it was cleaning the church grounds, hanging weekly signage, counting offerings, locking up after services, or checking the security system, Jimmy could always be counted on.
He found joy in simple pleasures and meaningful connections. In his younger years, Jimmy enjoyed fishing trips, boating adventures, and camping excursions that brought him closer to nature and those around him. In retirement, he found comfort in watching classic television shows like "In the Heat of the Night" and looked forward to senior lunches with his church community.
Above all else, Jimmy cherished his family. He is survived by his devoted wife, Kim Akins; son David Akins and daughter-in-law Kim; daughter Shelly McCoy and son-in-law Mark; grandchildren Uniece Pride, Isaiah Akins, and Kaiden McCoy; brothers Denis Akins, Arthur Akins, and Timothy Akins (Barbara); sister Tina Akins; as well as many beloved nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jimmy and Evelyn Akins; siblings Elizabeth Akins, Fred Akins, Forrest Akins, Marilyn Akins, Barbara Akins, JL Akins; and Robin Akins, a sisterin-love whose memory remained close to his heart.
Jimmy Ray Akins leaves behind a legacy of steadfast service-to his country through military duty and postal work; to his church through humble acts of care; and to his family through love that never wavered. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him.
