Joe Alvin Palmer entered this world on August 16, 1942, in Maben, Mississippi, to the late Peyton Palmer and Doris Palmer. Joe was the first child of their union and the first son among three siblings. He was raised in a home grounded in faith, responsibility, and love — values that remained with him throughout his life. From an early age, Joe developed a strong relationship with the Lord. He was baptized at Traveler Rest Missionary Baptist Church and walked faithfully with God throughout his life. His unwavering faith served as a guiding light, shaping the man he became and the way he loved and cared for others.
Joe received his education in the Mississippi public school system and graduated from Artiva Hall Webster High School in Maben. He continued his education at Rust College, where his athletic talent quickly became evident. An exceptional football player, Joe later transferred to Alabama A&M University, where he continued to excel on the football field. His determination, discipline, and natural athletic ability earned him opportunities to play semi-professional football, where he became known for his strength, skill, and commanding presence on the field.
Beyond athletics, Joe built a life defined by perseverance and entrepreneurship. His education and strong work ethic laid the foundation for a successful professional career. He first worked for the State of Alabama before pursuing his passion and independence by establishing his own business as a professional landscaper. Through dedication, integrity, and pride in his craft, Joe earned the respect and admiration of many within his community.
He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Doris Palmer and Peyton Palmer, and his brother, John Palmer.
Joe leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife, Bernie Palmer and his Beloved sister, Ethel Jean Palmer Shields of Memphis, along with extended family members, dear friends, former teammates, neighbors, and all whose lives were enriched by his presence.
Joe Alvin Palmer’s legacy will live on through the many lives he touched with his strength, determination, compassion, and enduring love. Though he is no longer with us in body, his spirit will remain forever in the hearts of those who loved him.
“Well done, thy good and faithful servant.”
