Sister Norma Gwendolyn Salandy, the only child, was born to the late Hubert and Princess Alice Joseph on June 4th, 1919 in the beautiful island of Trinidad, West Indies. Sister Salandy transitioned from life on May 31st, 2014 surrounded by her daughters.
Sister Salandy was joined in Holy Matrimony to the late Sampson John Salandy on November 27th, 1937. To this union, eight children were born; four sons, Fred, Michael (Joyce), Ralph (Shelia), and the late Hubert (Yvonne), and four daughters, Nearl, Nelleen (Darryl), Sherill (Gregory), and Jennifer.
Sister Salandy dedicated her life to God, family, church and her community. She worked for several years at the Madison County Department of Human Resources as a Social Worker with the at-risk children. Most of her life she served as a Deaconess, Sabbath school teacher, and any areas that was needed in the Seventh Day Adventist Churches as she relocated from Trinidad, to New York City, to Huntsville, Alabama and Atlanta, Georgia where she completed her service. “Mommy” as she was most affectionately called, shared her talents of sewing, crocheting, basket weaving and cooking her famous pastries with anyone willing to learn.
Sister Salandy is survived by her seven living children, twenty-seven grandchildren, a host of great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.
Even in the midst of our sadness; we gratefully acknowledge the legacy of love and sacrifices that “mommy” made. We are so grateful that God blessed us with this wonderful gift of her life.
