Nécrologie de Brantley Lafayette Alexander
Brantley passed away peacefully in the early morning of March 25, 2020, at age 81. He was born Brantley Lafayette Alexander to Idell Redding and Catherine Louise (Schreck) Alexander on December 21, 1938, in Lake Worth, Florida. He was always proud of being born on the winter solstice. His family moved to San Diego, California, and he attended schools there and at California Concordia College, in Oakland, California, a Lutheran boarding school modeled after the German gymnasium. He left California to complete his undergraduate studies at Concordia College in Ft. Wayne, and then studied for the ministry at Lutheran Theological Seminary in St. Louis. Further education included graduate degrees in English, business, and theology. A passionate educator, he taught Latin and English to Advanced Placement students at Luther South High School in Chicago and would take his students on field trips abroad to ancient sites in Italy and Greece. He left teaching to enter the business world as a corporate recruiter and executive coach, ultimately becoming a vice president and senior consultant at Lee Hecht Harrison in Washington, DC. In his later years, he became a deacon in the Episcopal Church, serving the Diocese of Indianapolis at All Saints Episcopal Church. Brantley was a voracious reader with a library representing wide-ranging interests. In addition to reading, he loved to cook, and he was an ardent fan of Butler University basketball. He is survived by Patricia, his wife and partner of 25 years; his sons Andrew (Karla Knobel) of Madison, Wisconsin, and Stephen of Keene, New Hampshire; his daughter Sarah (Dominique Dubé) of Manchester, New Hampshire; his beloved grandchildren Emily, Isabel, Brooke, Roan and Graeme Alexander, and Olivia and Sophia Dubé; and his sister Sharon. The family would like to thank the staff of Anthology of Meridian Hills and Brookdale Hospice for their loving care of him in the last months and weeks of his life. Burial will be private. A memorial service will be announced once the pandemic has subsided. Donations may be made in Brantley’s memory to the Episcopal Church of All Saints, 1559 Central Avenue, Indianapolis, IN 46202, or the Dayspring Center Family Emergency Shelter, P.O. Box 44105, Indianapolis, IN 46244.
