Catherine Aires Cassell, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, coach, and friend, passed away peacefully on September 2, surrounded by her devoted husband and all of her children, after suffering a stroke. She was 85.
Born in Nutley, New Jersey, Cathy was the second youngest of ten children to Frank and Julia Aires. Her father worked for General Electric in New York City, while her mother dedicated her life to raising their large family. Growing up in a bustling household shaped Cathy into the resilient, compassionate, and faith-filled woman so many came to love.
While attending the University of Houston, Cathy’s life took a fateful turn when she met her future husband, Ollan Cassell. Cathy was then serving as president of the Newman Center, a Catholic student organization, while Ollan was president of the Baptist Student Union. Their love story blossomed despite their differing faith traditions, leading to a marriage that endured for 65 years—anchored in respect, devotion, and shared values.
Together, Cathy and Ollan built a family that became her proudest legacy. She is survived by her six children:
• Chris Cassell (spouse Senta; children Jake, Carolyn, and Tessa)
• Cindy Cassell (spouse David Uible; daughter Emma)
• Colleen Cassell (spouse Bob Barrett; son Connor)
• Collette Harlan (spouse Rob; children John and Julia)
• Craig Cassell (spouse Brady; children Blake, Emerson, and Keaton)
• Curt Cassell (spouse Elizabeth; daughter Parker)
She is also survived by two of her sisters: Sister Barbara Aires of Jersey City, NJ, and Dotsy Fitts of Oxford, MS (spouse Tom; children Kerry, Emily, Molly, and John Thomas).
Cathy’s influence extended far beyond her family. As a teacher and coach, she inspired generations of young athletes in track and field, volleyball, basketball, and softball. Known affectionately as “Mrs. Cassell” or "Coach Cassell" on the courts and fields, she modeled discipline, perseverance, and teamwork, and impacted countless individuals who still carry her lessons in both sports and life.
Above all, Cathy will be remembered for her unwavering Catholic faith, her deep love for her family, and the joy and inspiration she brought to everyone she encountered. Whether cheering from the sidelines, hosting family gatherings, or offering quiet encouragement, she lived her life with generosity of spirit and a heart full of love.
Her family asks that she be remembered not only for her accomplishments but also for the light she brought to others—as a devoted wife, a nurturing mother, a proud grandmother, a cherished sister, a faithful believer, and a mentor who helped others reach their fullest potential.
