Born on May 27, 1956, David grew up in Huntington, Indiana, and was a graduate of Huntington North High School 1974. Following graduation, he proudly entered the United States Army, serving as a cook during the post-Vietnam era. His service included an overseas tour in Turkey, and he remained a dedicated veteran throughout his life, carrying the values of discipline and service into everything he did.
David was a devoted father who found his greatest joy in his children. He built a respected career as a chef and executive chef throughout the Indianapolis area, culminating in his work at Eli Lilly. For more than 30 years, he used his talents to feed and serve others, both professionally and within his community and church.
Outside of work, David loved the outdoors—especially fishing. Any day spent fishing was a good day. He enjoyed time spent with his children and grandchildren exploring woods, parks, and water, creating memories that will last a lifetime. Along the way, he formed many special, lifelong friendships that meant a great deal to him.
David was preceded in death by his parents, Bob and Nancy Mitchell, and his brother, Steve Mitchell.
He is survived by his children: Katherine (Chris) Morgan, Matthew (Marissa) Mitchell, and Andrew (Jessica) Mitchell; his siblings: his twin sister Sharon Mitchell, Debby Stevens, and Terry Mitchell. He will be forever remembered as “Grandpa” and “Pop-Pop” by his eight grandchildren: Cody, Lilith, Charlotte, Cora, Ella, Eli, Zoe, and Sage; and his great-granddaughter, Clover.
Visitation will be held from 12:00 pm – 2:00 pm on Monday, April 27, 2026, at Adkins Bailey-Love Mortuary, 35 West Park Drive, Huntington, IN.
Memorial services will follow at 2:00 pm at the mortuary, with Pastor Jason Fields officiating.
Dad, you taught us how to work hard, love our families, and find peace in the outdoors. Save us a spot by the water — we’ll fish together again someday.
