Diane Marie Hallquist passed away peacefully on January 21, 2026, at home surrounded by her family. She was born on August 10, 1947, in Pocahontas, Iowa, to Leo and Marie Pattee, and the oldest of their five children. She attended Pocahontas Catholic School through grade school and high school.
She graduated from Iowa State University in 1969 with a design degree in Interior Design. She was a proud member of Alpha Chi Omega sorority. She came to Indianapolis after being recruited by L.S. Ayres & Co. where she met another Iowa State graduate, Derry Hallquist, who became her husband.
Diane eventually opened her own design business, Diane Hallquist Interior Design, that successfully ran for over forty years. She then opened her shop, The Blue Door, adjacent to her design studio. Diane was an active member of the Indiana Chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID). She participated for many years in the St. Margaret's Guild Decorators’ Show House, raising funds for Wishard, now Eskenazi Hospital. Her rooms received many awards including the prestigious “Designer Key Award’.
In the community, Diane was active in the Christamore Aid Society, where she served as President. As a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Diane sang in the choir and traveled to Honduras with their mission group. She also was a member of the Indianapolis Chapter of Tri Kappa and the Indianapolis Museum of Art.
Diane and her husband Derry were avid sports fans supporting the Colts, Pacers, Fever, Iowa State and Purdue teams. When both their son, Tyler, and daughter, Megan, became active in sports, they were tireless cheerleaders and attended games both near and far. As ticket holders for over fifty years, the Indianapolis 500 was an annual family event, and their race party was eagerly awaited by their many friends. Entertaining and gardening were two of her favorite hobbies. Her home away from home for the last thirty years was at her house on Burt Lake, Michigan, where she hosted many family and friends, including the annual “Pattee Relation Vacation”.
Being a parent to Megan and Tyler was the most important role Diane undertook and now with Megan's two young daughters, Penelope and Mabel, she was the doting grandmother she longed to be.
Diane was preceded in death by her husband Derry, her parents, and her youngest brother Joe. She will be sorely missed by her son Tyler Hallquist of Victor, ID, daughter Megan Oliver (Eric) and granddaughters Penelope and Mabel of Goldens Bridge, NY; her sister Joane Amick (John) of Oelwein, IA; brother Howard Pattee of Pocahontas, IA; sister Janice Pattee of Indianapolis, IN; sister-in-law Jeanne McCartan of Des Moines, IA; brother-in-law Daryl Hallquist (Anne) of Bozeman, MT; sister-in-law Lynn Hallquist of Anchorage, AK, and many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Diane to “Friends of Honduras” (an organization Diane, Tyler and Megan traveled to support).
