Douglas Roy Hart, 72, of Indianapolis, Indiana, passed away on January 18, 2026. He was born January 3, 1954, in Santa Monica, California to the late Alfred and Jane (Starr) Hart. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and public servant, Doug lived a life marked by steadfast commitment, humility, and service to others.
Doug began his firefighting career on April 18, 1980, when he joined the ranks of the Washington Township Fire Department. From the moment he pinned on his Firefighter’s Badge, Doug understood that he had become a man set apart—one entrusted with the responsibility to protect and safeguard the lives and property of the people of Indianapolis. He served the Washington Township Fire Department with honor for 26½ years, continuing through the department’s merger with the Indianapolis Fire Department. After a distinguished and impactful career, he retired on January 26, 2019, leaving behind a legacy defined by courage, integrity, and quiet leadership.
Doug was an active member of Hope Evangelical Covenant Church. He quietly served with a crew of men to maintain the church property inside and outside. He enjoyed serving meals at Wheeler Mission and meeting for bible study. Service was his best expression of faith.
In his younger years, Doug found joy and freedom outdoors. He loved mountain and rock climbing, running and cycling. He was also an avid camper and kayaker, often seeking out new places to explore. In addition to his love of the outdoors, Doug enjoyed a wide variety of hobbies, which included cooking and grilling for others, playing his guitar and photography.
Doug is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Kitty Hart; their children: Matthew (Lindsay) Hart; Lauren (Greg) Fox, Whitney (Kevin) Lynch, and Timothy (Rachel) Hart; and three grandchildren, Clover, Oscar, and Oliver. He is also survived by his sister, Janet Judy.
