Edward “Ed” Brune, 84, of Indianapolis, passed away April 28, 2021. He was born March 22, 1937 in Hamilton, Ohio to the late Herbert and Catherine (Irwin) Brune. Ed earned his undergraduate degree in philosophy, masters in political science, and his law degree from the University of Cincinnati. He was a founding member of the Indianapolis Racquet Club, as well as the general manager and tennis director from 1965 - 2019. He also was the head professional at the Woodstock Club from 1964-1988. “Poppy”, as his grandchildren called him, was president and on the board of directors of the Central Indiana Tennis Association, board member of the Indianapolis Tennis Association, 401st member of the United States Professional Tennis Association, recipient of the Stan Malless Service Award, and Chairman of the Tennis Industry Association Play Tennis America. As an avid outdoorsman, one of his favorite places on earth was his cabin in Baxter State Park in Maine. Like his love for tennis, he shared his love for Maine and the outdoors by bringing his children and grandchildren to spend weeks at the cabin each year. He instilled them with an adventuresome spirit, and love for nature, hiking, canoeing, fishing, and swimming in the cold Maine waters. He was preceded in death by his three siblings, Herb Brune, Marilyn Ruwe and Jackie Baumann. Jackie was his older sister who signed him up for his first tennis tournament, never having played before. Survivors include his wife Jane, his three children Doug, Tom, and Kate, and his nine grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Luke Catholic Church for close family.
