Iona Cora (Merrick) Wesley, 96, of Indianapolis, died peacefully in Evergreen Crossing At The Loft on Friday, October 16, 2020. She was born August 11, 1924 in Elkhart, Indiana to the late Forrest and Caroline (Sensenbaugh) Merrick. She graduated from Indiana School for the Deaf in 1943. Iona married Homer C. Wesley in 1945 and they enjoyed 39 wonderful years together.
Iona was very involved with the deaf community and had supported and volunteered at such places as the Archibald Memorial Home, Monticello Deaf Club, Greater Indianapolis Deaf Club and Indiana Association of the Deaf. She was accomplished at sewing, quilting, crocheting, cross-stitching, upholstering, cooking and baking. She loved making things by hand for her loving family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She will be missed by all who knew her and remembered for her kind and gentle soul and her beautiful smile.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Homer C. Wesley, Jr.; siblings, Welmer Merrick, Eldon Merrick ad Forrest Merrick and granddaughters, Lori Lyn Norwood and Chala Burton.
Iona is survived by her son, Alan Wesley of Florence, AZ and daughter, Sharon Wesley-Dunn of Indianapolis; her siblings, Firmer (Jean) Merrick of Goshen, IN, Francis (Barbara) Merrick of La Junta, CO, Doris Maddux of Goshen, IN, Thelma (Robert) Bohli of Penfield, NY and Dorothy(Gil) Daoust of Houston, TX; grandchildren, Scott (Brenda) Wesley of Oswego, NY, Troy (Lorre) Wesley of Anderson, IL, Angie (Craig) Newendyke of Florence, AZ, Christine (Donnie) Kesler of West Terre Haute, IN and Garrett (Jeanny) Wooten of Indianapolis; brother-in-law, Robert Quire of Jeffersontown, KY; sister-in-law, Merrylen Sparks of Bardstown, KY; nine great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews and friends.
Visitation for Iona and funeral services will be at Lincoln Memory Gardens (6851 S Indianapolis Rd, Whitestown, IN 46075) on Wednesday, October 21st with visitation from 12:00 pm until time of services at 2:00 pm. Rev. Gene Merrick officiating. Interment follows chapel services in the cemetery.
