Joan L. Joel, age 96, of Indianapolis, Indiana departed this life on Friday, December 5, 2025. Joan was born on November 9, 1929 in Troy, Ohio to the late Arnt Thorleaf & Emilie (Siegenthaler) Mortrud. She earned a degree in Physical Education from DePauw University and worked as a teacher for several years in Illinois.
Joan was a kind and gentle soul who always put the needs of others before her own. She was first and foremost dedicated to her family and was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. Joan made friends wherever she ventured. She was an accomplished bowler and Bridge player and made many special connections at the bowling alleys and card tables she enjoyed so very much. She also loved all things outdoors. She kept her gardens beautiful and weed free, and loved hiking our state parks with her husband Bob.
Joan was a familiar face at St. Vincent Women's Hospital where her natural charm was much appreciated as a volunteer for nearly two decades. Her friendly disposition, welcoming ways, and interest in others was genuine in every regard. She loved to travel and experience different cultures. It is estimated that she and Bob were fortunate to have visited over 100 different countries. Her favorite memories were made in China and Africa.
Joan was preceded in death by her husband, Robert L. Joel and siblings, Thomas Mortrud and Barry Ensminger.
She is survived by her devoted sons, Robert (Lynn Graykowski) Joel and David Joel; grateful grandchildren, Constance (Peter) Larson, Michelle (Bryan) Likins, Morgan Joel, Rebecca (Zach) Joel, William (Elyse) Joel, and Karyn (Peter) Hisgen; her beloved great-grandchildren, Gunnar Larson, Ophelia Hisgen, Carson Likins, and Toby Hisgen; as well as a host of dear friends at Marquette Manor.
A Celebration of Life for Joan will be held at Marquette Manor – Foundation Hall (8140 Township Line Road) on Saturday, December 20th at 11:30am. Interment follows for a private family ceremony at Oak Hill Cemetery in Crawfordsville, Indiana.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested in Joan’s name to the American Heart Association.
