Joe dedicated his life to education and athletics. He served as a Chemistry Professor at Butler University for 54 years, earning his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois and inspiring countless students. Beyond the classroom, Joe was deeply involved in youth sports, coaching baseball, basketball, softball, and soccer. An avid athlete himself, he played tennis competitively at the Indianapolis Racquet Club and enjoyed caring for animals, including cats, dogs, and horses.
Joe was a proud supporter of Butler athletics, serving as a faculty NCAA representative and attending numerous sporting events. His passion for sports and education touched many lives.
He is survived by his loving wife, Linda Kay Kirsch (née Biggs); his children, Joseph L. Kirsch III (Rhea) and Traci M. Berns (Jamie); grandchildren Dr. Jessica Berns, M.D. (Raphael Nepo), Cameron Kirsch, Jake Berns, Riley Kirsch; great-grandchild Mila M. Nepo, and sister, Dr. Cindy Willis, M.D. (Ed). He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph L. Kirsch and Rose M. Kirsch.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday, December 10, 2025, from 4:00 to 8:00 PM at Leppert Mortuary – Nora Chapel, 740 E. 86th St., Indianapolis, IN.
