

Mary was born in Pierre, SD and was the youngest child of Charles and Lucy (Summer) Pietrus. She was raised on a farming ranch near Blunt, SD.
Mary graduated from Pierre High School in Pierre, SD and St. John’s School of Nursing in Huron, SD. Mary completed anesthesia training in Omaha, NE and became a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA). Mary worked as a nurse and CRNA in South Dakota, North Dakota, and Indiana.
Mary and Jack Schliessmann were married in Pierre, SD. They moved around the United States due to Jack’s profession and settled in Indianapolis, IN, where they made their home with their five children.
Mary was active in the Catholic Church, belonged to Catholic Daughters, and was a member of the Marquette Chapel Choir for many years. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She enjoyed corresponding and staying in contact with family and friends met through her life travels. During the past few years, Mary took pleasure in playing bingo, listening to live music, and working on craft projects.
Mary is survived by her loving children: Lucia (Dan Mach) and their daughter Catherine; Reverend Thomas; Richard (Caryn) and their daughter Angelina; James (Melissa) and their sons Joseph and Alexander; Martin (Tiffany Hilton); and other extended family.
Mary is preceded in death by her husband Jack, her parents, and brothers (Leo, Philip, and Eugene).
A Memorial Visitation will be held on January 9, 2026, from 9:30 am to 11:30 am at St. Luke Catholic Church (7575 E Holliday Dr, Indianapolis, IN 46260). A Mass of Christian Burial for Mary will follow at 11:30 am. Inurnment then follows at Our Lady of Peace Cemetery Mausoleum.
