Born on December 8, 1950, to Aribert and Mabel Young, Dick was a lifelong resident of Indianapolis and a 1969 graduate of North Central High School. He attended Ball State University, where he was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity, and later earned his Juris Doctor cum laude from Indiana University Indianapolis School of Law. Dick had a distinguished 50-year career at Kightlinger & Gray. A respected litigator, he was frequently honored by his peers. He received the Indiana State Bar Association’s Civility Award, was named a Diplomat of the Defense Trial Counsel of Indiana, and was annually named to Indiana’s SuperLawyers list.
He was a member of the White River Yacht Club, board member of the Hoosier Art Salon, and the Indianapolis Legal Aid Society. Professionally, he was a longtime member of the Federation of Defense & Corporate Counsel (FDCC), the American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA), and the Trucking Industry Defense Association (TIDA). Across these groups, he maintained friendships that stretched back to his grade school days. Dick had a particular soft spot for dogs, a good book, and a glass of bourbon shared with friends.
In 1975, Dick married Kimberlee Ann Tweedy. Kim and Dick proved to be a wonderful team over the years, raising three children and recently celebrating their golden wedding anniversary.
Dick was defined by a genuine zest for life and an extroverted spirit. He was a man of many hobbies, most notably a lifelong passion for collecting and restoring cars—having owned approximately 85 over the course of his life. He attended over 50 runnings of the Indianapolis 500 and countless Pacer games. Whether he was tinkering in the garage, swapping autos, or captaining boat rides for his grandkids at Lake Lemon, Dick was happiest when he was in motion.
Dick was predeceased by his parents, his brother Doug, and many good dogs. He is survived by his wife Kim; his children, Jamie (Kim Karr), Sarah (David Hafley), and John (Chelsea); and his sister, Deborah (Mike Chezem). He also leaves behind seven grandchildren who will forever cherish their boat rides with Grandpa: Leeann, Connor, Julian, Frances, Beatrix, Boone, and Ray.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Indianapolis Legal Aid Society. To honor Dick’s memory, go for a drive in your favorite car, crank up the Van Morrison, feed a dog from the table, or raise a glass to a life exceptionally well-lived.
