

Burke, Douglas Benedict “Dougie” Age 72, of Inverness, passed away on Thursday, September 5, 2013, in Inverness Consolidated Memorial Hospital. Born in Inverness on September 16, 1940, Dougie was a son of the late Dougall Alexander and Katie Sarah (MacLean) Burke. Dougie was a member of Stella Maris Church, Inverness, and worked for many years for Snow White Laundry, Sydney, traveling throughout Inverness County. He later owned and operated a taxi business and convience store, Peg’s Market until his retirement. Although he and his wife Peggy had no children, he is survived by his niece, Roberta (David) Taylor, Inverness, whom he considered his daughter; and his godson, John Basker, Inverness, whom he considered his son. Dougie is survived by sister, Mary (Russell) Comeau, Dartmouth; brothers, Angus (Eva), Bramalea, Ont.; and Gerard (Debbie), Toronto Ont.; several nieces and nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews. Predeceased by his wife, Florence Marie “Peggy”; brothers, George (late Mary), David (Peggy), Malcolm, John (late Mary), Ernest (late Joyce), David Anthony. Visitation will be held on Sunday, September 8 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held on Monday September 9 at 11 a.m. in Stella Maris Church, Inverness, with Fr. Duncan MacIsaac officiating; burial to follow in the parish cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Renal Dialysis Clinic of Inverness Consolidated Memorial Hospital or to Stella Maris Church Building Fund, Inverness.
