

Melvin Joseph Young "Mel" Age 63, passed away Thursday, January 23, 2014, in St. Martha’s Regional Hospital, Antigonish after a long battle with cancer surrounded by family. Mel was a member of St. Patrick’s Church, North East Margaree. Anyone who knew Mel, knew how much he loved spending time at his cabin in Margaree. He loved the outdoors, planting flowers, mowing grass, moose hunting, spending time with his family, his many friends and of course cheering on his favourite team, The Yankees. He enjoyed travelling South, and his trips to New York City and Yankee Stadium. Mel worked in Toronto for many years, before moving back to Cape Breton, and worked as a truck driver for Ocean Paving, Port Hawkesbury. Mel’s favourite saying was “Once a friend, always a friend, even to the end” and “Yankees are the best, ask anyone who knows anything about baseball.” He is survived by his best friend and wife, Tena (Campbell) Young; son, Blenise (Leela), and precious grandchildren, Campbell, Rory, Jack, and K9 pal Chevy, mother, Jean Baker, He is predeceased by his adoptive parents, Alex and Elizabeth (Ross) Young, and his biological father, the late, Robert Hood, (North Sydney); his siblings, Dennis and Alex Young, his sister, Hughena Hannigan, and nephew Brian Hannigan. No visitation by family request. Funeral mass will be held in St. Patrick’s Church, North East Margaree on Tuesday January 28 at 11 a.m. with Fr. Doug MacDonald officiating co celebrated by fr. Hughie D. MacDonald. Burial to follow in the parish cemetery. Family flowers only. Donations to St. Patrick’s cemetery fund, North East Margaree.
