With caring hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Sally, the youngest and last surviving member of her family, passed away at home surrounded by the love of her family, on August 18, 2017. Born in Glencoe Station on March 28, 1916, Sally was the daughter of the late Alexander (Sandy the Dancer) and Margaret (MacNeil) MacMillan.
Sally always lived a vibrant and active life, raising and educating her large family with her husband, Angus. She remained devoted to her Glencoe Station roots, but she deeply loved her Mabou home and her Mabou community, leading her to become involved in numerous community, school, and church activities. The CWL, Mary's Hill Home, and her many volunteer interests gained much from her efforts.
Family gatherings, especially those involving her children and their spouses, her treasured grandchildren and her great- grandchildren, as well as her relatives and friends, had a special place in her heart. She had superb cooking and baking skills and she used them to create delicious feasts loved by all. She will remain in the memory of many for her generosity of spirit, her wisdom, her quick wit, her creativity in storytelling, her keen intellect, her joy of music, nature, and friendship, her love of laughter, her many kind acts, and her cups of very hot tea. She enjoyed political and religious discussions, reading her newspapers and books, watching Sid Crosby play hockey, relaxing with her buddy, Guinness, and especially sitting on her veranda.
Sally touched the lives and hearts of many, enriching their lives and sharing her wisdom, while bringing them joy, laughter, and advice. How does one describe a remarkable life of 101 years in a few words? Sally brought inspiration through actions, values, courage, love, and independence. We shall miss her dearly.
Sally is survived by her children, Margo Ross, London, ON; Sandra (Frank) Gergich, Tillsonburg, ON; Allan (Pat) Beaton, Vancouver, BC; Helen Anne (Wayne) Bassani, Dartmouth; Miriam (George) Gillis, Antigonish; Lorraine Beaton, Inglisville; Norman Beaton, Mabou; daughter-in-law, Jayne Beaton, Inverness; 22 grandchildren and 27 great- grandchildren. She also leaves behind extended family, F.X. (Mary Catherine) Rankin, Mabou; Marcy Rankin, Halifax; Anita (Don) MacDougall, Halifax; and a number of nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Angus D. Beaton in 1991; cherished children, Patricia and Mary (in infancy), Angus Kevin; son-in-law, James Ross; daughter-in-law, Eileen Beaton; special sister-in-law, Sister Anne Beaton; niece, Sandra Rankin; siblings, Jessie MacDonald, Kay Hickey, Helen Melanson, Maggie May, John, Alexander Charles, and Hugh MacMillan.
The Beaton Family would like to express heartfelt thanks for the care and kindness extended to Sally by the entire Central Inverness Palliative Care Society, especially Lori Ann MacDonald, the Inverness County Home Support Program, and Father Bernie MacDonald.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Central Inverness Palliative Care Society, St. Mary's Parish Cemetery, or a charity of your choice.
