She was born in Gladewater, Tx October 10, 1935 to Bennie Blanch Russell and Edward Burton Young. She graduated High School in 1952 in Sedan, Oklahoma. She was married January 30, 1954 to Vern Martin Mikkelson, turned down a full ride basketball scholarship, and started her military wife career and moved to San Antonio. From San Antonio they moved to Sydney, Nova Scotia while pulling a 26ft airstream trailer behind them. In 1957 they welcome their first daughter, then moved to Virginia, then back to Texas where they welcome their second daughter. Throughout her life she traveled to different bases, as Vern was enlisted Air Force and she wore the military wife title proudly. In 1970 the family moved to Hawaii, where she started a girls' sports program in Hawaii where they had none. She ran it off of donations and volunteers to build it into quite the operation. In 1974 they moved to lowa Park, Tx and this is where her traveling career came to an end.
While being in Texas, she became a member of the North Texas Toll Painters where she painted anything that a brush could touch. She was a member of Thrivent and worked very hard to make donations to worthwhile charities and nonprofits. She was a member of The Daughters of the American Revolution and could be found once a month having a tea party with the ladies. She was a charter member of the RAC board in lowa Park, where the community could utilize the facility in a positive way. At one point her life she worked as dental hygienist, at the bargain bin, and was a hairdresser for several years. In later years when the kids got older, she helped coach an adult league softball team, and would travel the state with the winning ball team.
The thing about her was, she wanted to fix things, and make better than they were before. She was heavily involved in church, and other community efforts, always trying to make sure the youth had positive things to engage in. She built an empty lot into a playground full of fun and laughter.
To know her was to know her quick wit and humor.
She is survived by her two daughters; Gala Mikkelson and Dana Mikkelson Davis, 3 grandchildren; Mindy Mikkelson Sullivan (husband Clyde Sullivan), Zach Davis (husband Matt Ebner), and Nathan Davis (wife Morgan Davis), two great granddaughters; McKyla Sullivan and Emsley Sullivan.
The family will have a private memorial at a later date.
The family wishes to extend a heart filled thanks to Healing Hands Home Health, and Healing Hands Hospice for their love and care of Stormy. Memorials may be made to the RAC in lowa Park (in her honor) or The lowa Park optimist Club.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.duttonfuneralhome.com for the Mikkelson family.
