COLUMBIA Abelardo "Al" "Lalo" Papa Amancio, 86, beloved husband of Josephine Strom Amancio, entered into rest peacefully on Wednesday, July 6, 2022. He honorably served in the U.S. Army for 20 years and retired Sergeant First Class, receiving numerous accommodations including Army of Occupation Medal (Germany), Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (Korea), National Defense Services Medal, Army Commendation Medal; 2 Bars, Vietnam Service Meal with 3 Bronze Stars, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry, and the Silver Star. He was a retired Golf Course Superintendent. Playing golf (scratch golfer), watching the Atlanta Braves, reading and visiting with his grandchildren and great grandchildren gave him much joy. He joyfully devoted many years parenting three granddaughters, Paige, Lisa, and Lori from toddlers to adulthood. He accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior in 1988. His love for the Lord grew as he spent many hours expanding his faith and biblical knowledge reading, studying the bible and praying for his family and the world around him every day. Our nation should mourn because a soldier passed away, but heaven is rejoicing.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Josephine Strom Amancio; a daughter, Margaret Prater; stepdaughters, Cathy W. Pitcher, Debra W. English; stepgrandchildren, Nicholas Agostas, Erica Caputo, Haley Agostas, Paige Roof, Amanda Reynolds, Lisa Cowan, Lori Chavous, Zachary Pitcher, Callison Madsen, Christian English, Robert English; and 18 stepgreat-grandchildren, Isabella Chaney, Sophia Chaney, Nathaniel Chaney, Isaac Chaney, Michael Prickett, Katie Prickett, Will Agostas, Rachel Chavous, Lillie Roof, Zoey Roof, Jessica Chavous, Hop Reynolds, Courtney Chavous, Holden Roof, Allison Chavous, Connor Roof, Bella Cowan, and Ezra Pitcher.
