COLUMBIA - “Hey Darlin’; I’m on Hollyday, Love You Darlin”. It is unbelievably sad that we will not hear these words spoken again or see that smile light up the room because Betty Gibbes Wiggins passed away Saturday, December 26, 2020.
Betty was many things to those who knew her – loving wife, mother, sister and friend. She was incredibly strong, having survived the passing of her husband, William W. Wiggins II; her brother, James M Conrad, Jr.; her sons, William Warren Wiggins III and Kevin W Wiggins. She was also predeceased by her mother, Eula G. Conrad; her father, Andrew Gibbes and her stepfather, James M. Conrad, Sr. Betty is survived by her cousin, Wyatt Taylor and numerous beloved friends.
Betty’s heart was full of love and compassion. She truly lived life on her terms and passed away with her beloved dog, LiLo at her side.
Betty was born in Columbia, S.C. She graduated from Olympia High School where she excelled in basketball. She retired as a supervisor from Southern Bell Telephone Company after 32 years of service to stay home and care for her son, Kevin, who was her angel.
She was an avid Gamecock fan, through the good and bad years, having attended many games earlier in life, but now watching all of the basketball and football games on TV. She often had friends over to watch games with her, hearing her shout out to her favorite player, “Dammit”.
Many of Betty’ life-long friendships began on the tennis courts, a sport she played until she was 80 years old. In her earlier years she attended many professional tennis tournaments, including the US Open, but settled for watching the sport on TV after she was unable to go. Those of us who ever went with Betty on the “girls’ trips” to Fripp Island or Hilton Head Island have lasting memories of non-stop fun, laughs, tennis and very little sleep. Betty has asked to have her earthly body cremated and the ashes to be scattered on the tennis courts at Hilton Head Island.
Because there is no place safe enough at this time for all of her many friends to gather, we will not have an immediate service. As soon as close contact is safe, we will have a huge Celebration of Betty’s Life, where we can laugh and cry together and tell many humorous stories of the one and only Betty “Boo” Wiggins. Rest in peace, our Angel.
Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel, is assisting the family.
