Tommy Kitchens was the first co-worker whom I both liked and admired when I joined NCR in Columbia in the 1980's. Tommy's decency, consideration, courtesy, and consistent desire and ability to be helpful, were exemplary to me. His dutiful approach to all of his roles, a commitment to standards in work and in life, and his steadfast will and desire to learn, are as difficult to emulate as they would be a loss to forget.

Gentlemen such as Tommy are seldom the subject of tweets (today) or headlines (then). Neither noisy gongs or clanging cymbals, they do not draw attention in proportion to their greatness.

John Henry Newman would put it this way: Tommy&nbspKitchens ... makes light of favors while he does them, and seems to be receiving when he is conferring. He never speaks of himself except when compelled, and never defends himself by a mere retort. He has no ears for slander or gossip, and is scrupulous in imputing motives to those who interfere with him. He is never mean or little in his disputes, never takes unfair advantage, never mistakes personalities or sharp sayings for arguments, nor insinuates evil which he dare not say out. From a long-sighted prudence, he observes the maxim of the ancient sage, that we should ever conduct ourselves towards our enemy as if he were one day to be our friend. He has too much good sense to be affronted at insults, is too well employed to remember injuries, and too indolent to bear malice. He is patient, forbearing, and resigned, on philosophical principles: he submits to pain because it is inevitable, to bereavement because it is irreparable, and to death because it is his destiny.

Thanks for your example, Tommy. Rest in peace. You certainly earned it.

I am so sorry to hear of Tommy's passing.  My most sincere condolences and prayers to his family. Tommy and I were childhood buddies up through our teenage years. I used to live down the street from his house on Fenwick St.   I joined the Air Force in1959 and spent 26 years away from the Augusta area. I think the last time I saw Tommy was in 1956.  I did run into his sister Ruth at the Brunswick bowling alley here in Augusta one night in 1989 after I retired and came back home . She told me He was living over  in Columbia.  I was stationed at Shaw AFB in Sumter for 3 yrs 1981-83. Had I known Tommy was in Columbia, I would have made an effort to look him up. 

I was privleged to have worked with Tommy at NCR.  He was a good Man and friend to me and my family during our time together at NCR.  Tommy was often there for me when I needed guidance and assistance in auto repairs.  He was a man who always seemed to have a positive disposition.  When asked how he was doing, Tommy would always respond by saying ‘better than I deserve.’  I am truly sorry that Tommy is no longer in this world and I am sorry that his wife and family have to experience his loss.

I'm so sorry to hear of Tommy's passing.  I remember him as a kind positive person during my time working at NCR in Columbia from 1984 to 1989.

I worked with Tommy for many years at NCR. He was one of the most positive, upbeat persons I have ever known. The last time I saw him was at the soccer field at Cornerstone Presbyterian church. He was watching a grandchild play. It was great to talk and catch up. I will always remember him as the guy who was always smiling and encouraging others.
