COLUMBIA – Elizabeth Ann Martin Werner, 89, of Columbia, passed away peacefully at her home, on Sunday, February 19, 2017, surrounded by her family. She returned to the Lord to be reunited with her family members and loved ones who have preceded her. Elizabeth was one of 12 children born to the late Peter and Marie Martin. She was born, along with her twin sister, the late Helen Martin, on April 2, 1927, in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. She was predeceased by seven of her brothers and two of her sisters and is survived by her brother, Robert Martin (Lillian); and her sister, Josephine Smart. Elizabeth was the loving wife of the late John L. Werner Jr. She is survived by her sons, Kevin J. Werner of Columbia, and James Lynn Werner (Candy); and two grandsons, John Chance Kirkley Werner and Pierce Martin Werner, also of Columbia. Elizabeth, “Betty” to many of her friends, retired from Lexington School District 5 after 35 years of service. She and her late husband were among the founding members of Our Lady of the Hills Catholic Church, where she remained an active member of the church community and various church organizations and activities until her passing. She also remained a lifelong member of the Saint Vincent Women’s Auxiliary. Elizabeth loved the simple things in life and was devoted to her family, her faith and her church. She enjoyed following the Pittsburgh Steelers and Duke basketball. She loved her friends from church and time to work in her yard. Most of all, she cherished meals with her family and spending time with her two grandsons. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, February 24, 2017, at Our Lady of the Hills Catholic Church, located at 120 Marydale Lane in Columbia. Her nephew, the Reverend James Martin of Austin Texas, will preside at the service. There will be no visitation. Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel, is assisting the family. The family expresses its special heartfelt thank you to Darcy, Avis, Joann and Anne for their wonderful care, thoughtfulness and compassion. Although Elizabeth loved plants and flowers, the family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Our Lady of the Hills Catholic Church, 120 Marydale Lane, Columbia, SC 29210.
