

Emily Jansen Westphal, 90, died December 16 at the Rice Estate Lutheran Home in Columbia, South Carolina. Emily was the loving and devoted matriarch of an extended Westphal clan of 36, who gathered in June to celebrate her 90thbirthday. She will be remembered for her generosity of spirit, her love of family, and her faith. Emily Marie Jansen was born on a farm near Olin, Iowa, on June 5, 1924. She graduated from Wyoming High School and was co-valedictorian with the man she would marry a few years later, Wayne Westphal. Emily was an active member of Lutheran churches in Davenport, Iowa, where four of her five children were born; Des Moines, Iowa; Lynchburg, Virginia; and Ocala, Florida. She and Wayne retired to Ocala in 1989. Emily later lived in retirement homes in Charlotte, North Carolina, and in Columbia. She was preceded in death by her husband. Survivors include her sister, Lucile VonSprecken, of Wyoming, Iowa; five children, Nancy Hartman of Hudson, Ohio; David of New York, N.Y.; Kenneth of St. Peter, Minnesota; Steven of Chapin, South Carolina; and Thomas of Knoxville, Tennessee; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Services will be December 30 at Living Saviour Lutheran Church in Charlotte. Burial will be at Wyoming Cemetery, near the farm where she grew up. Memorials may be made to Zion Lutheran Church of Davenport, Joy Lutheran Church of Ocala, or Living Saviour Lutheran Church of Charlotte.
