Gerard (Gerry) Genevrino was born in Newark, New Jersey, in 1932, the oldest son of three siblings, whose parents came from large Italian families, where cousins were abundant. Gerard grew into his teens loving to sing; he and his two siblings, Lou and Susan (who were dancers), spent some of their young years entertaining with a local amateur variety group.
Schooling was in East Orange, New Jersey, and following high school, Gerard was drafted into the Army during the Korean Conflict and deployed to Korea. He never saw combat – their ship was crossing the Pacific when the truce was signed – but spent a year in Korea as an Army radio operator.
When he was discharged and returned home in February 1955, his fiancé was waiting, and he and Mary Jean were married that following June. During their nearly fifty-year marriage, they had no children, but were dedicated cat parents. Gerard’s last cat, “Spice,” was his daily companion who prayed the rosary with him every day.
For more than thirty-five years, Gerard worked as a Draftsman for Ebasco Corporation in Long Island, New York, and they lived in Northport, where he quickly learned that living only two blocks from, and in view of, the harbor, he had to become a sailor. And so, many summer weekends found them sailing their very own Sloop around the North Shore.
His expertise in mechanical engineering tool and die design facilitated his travels around the country on special assignments and ended up in Irmo, South Carolina, where he decided to retire. Luckily, he owned a beautiful home just five minutes from devoted family members Rosanne and Chet, who were unhesitatingly always there when they were needed.
A life long bowler, Gerry immediately became involved in bowling at Anchor Lanes, after taking up residence in Irmo. One year, he and a friend famously became the South Carolina senior doubles bowling champions! His golf career was also illustrious when he won the Hole-in-One award at the Lake Murray Golf Center in July of 2000.
After recovering from the loss of his spouse, Gerry’s focus turned to bowling and developing long-term good friendships. The bowling, lunching and card-playing crew (“Hand and Foot” enthusiasts) met twice weekly. Many times, they met and played cards at Gerry’s loving friend Liz’s home. These friendships were a very meaningful part of Gerry’s life.
His bowling career and newly formed “Gerry’s Angels” team continued until very recently, only weeks prior to his death.
Whether he was Gerard to his family members or Gerry to his friends, he remains in our memories as kind, gentlemanly-mannered, sincere and loyal towards all those he loved and all who loved him.
Gerard was predeceased by his parents, George and Sue Genevrino, and his wife, Mary Jean (Livolsi) Genevrino.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 23, 2022 at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church. The family will receive friends at 1:30 p.m. prior to the service at the church. A reception will follow the service.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.dunbarfuneralhomedutchfork.com for the Genevrino family.
