Gregory James Bushorr went home to be with the Father and his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, on April 6, 2026, peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones. He was 78 years old. Gregory, or Cap as he was lovingly known, was born in Rochester, NY on May 25, 1947, to the late Melvin and Faye Bushorr. He was an active high school student who played music, sports, and served as class president. He attended Syracuse University and Buffalo Law School. He practiced law and real estate law in upstate New York for 40+ years. While practicing law, it was frowned upon to use his real name while playing music at night, hence his nickname, Cap James. He was also an avid tennis player and advanced to the Pro/Am level.
Cap was an accomplished, classically trained trumpet player. When he retired from law in 2003, he relocated to Columbia, SC, where he played with the USC Senior Concert Band, Columbia Summer Band, and the German Band. He founded the Cap James Music Ministry, whose mission was to “play it forward.” In 2020, he started his own 14-piece Big Band specializing in the old classic Big Band sounds. He and his smaller combos were known for playing Christmas parties and entertaining at nursing homes. He played in the orchestras at Riverland Hills Baptist Church and at Chapin Christian Community Church, where he was a much-loved member.
He is remembered for his analytic intelligence, his rapid-fire wit, humor, big heart, gentle kindness, love of music, and his strong faith in Jesus.
He met his beloved wife Jeannette in 2021, and they celebrated their few years together with joy and gratitude.
He is survived by his wife Jeannette, sons Jeff and Chris (Shannon), stepdaughter Lauren (Ethan), stepson Russ (Jennifer), grandchildren Haven, Cierra, Madison, Kylie, Liana, Michelle, Sydney, and Levi, and Jeannette’s daughters Lindsay (Stephen) and Caitlin.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 3:00 pm, Sunday, April 19, 2026, in the sanctuary at Chapin Christian Community Church, with visitation to follow. Committal of ashes will be in the Columbarium in the church cemetery at 2:30, for family and close friends who would like to attend.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to the Traditional Worship Music Ministry of Chapin Christian Community Church.
