

Irmo, South Carolina - Dr. James Dean Coleman, affectionately known as "Gentleman Jim," passed away peacefully at his home in Irmo, South Carolina, on August 9, 2025. Born in 1934 in Long Beach, California, Jim lived a life marked by service, dedication, and kindness.
A proud graduate of Stanford University and Stanford University School of Medicine, Jim served in the United States Navy from 1959 to 1970, including a tour during the Vietnam War. He achieved the active-duty rank of Commander and was honored to serve his country during a pivotal time in history.
Following his military service, Dr. Coleman entered private practice as an orthopedic surgeon at the Truesdale Clinic, where he cared for patients from 1970 until his retirement in 1999. His professional accomplishments included being named a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, serving as Chief of Orthopedic Surgery at Charlton Memorial Hospital, and leading as President of Truesdale Orthopedics. He also contributed to national athletics as a member of the Sports Medicine Committee for the Amateur Hockey Association of the United States. For nearly 20 years, he was the dedicated school physician for Durfee High School in Fall River, Massachusetts, where he supported generations of student athletes.
In retirement, Jim continued to give back to his community. He volunteered as a mentor at Dutch Fork Elementary School, where his warmth and encouragement touched countless young lives. His dedication to helping children succeed was recognized when he was named Mentor of the Year.
Jim is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Jean Marie Coleman; his children Richard Wesley Coleman and his partner Dena Rymsha, John Patrick Coleman and his wife Susie Watts Coleman, Deanna Coleman Boyle and her husband Scott Boyle, and Robert Matthews Coleman. He was predeceased by his eldest son, James Dean Coleman Jr., who was married to Barbara Coleman. He also leaves behind nine grandchildren, Jeremy, Hannah, Harry, Emily, Caroline, Ben, Camden, Ryan, and Bennett.
Those who knew "Gentleman Jim" will remember his quiet strength, his compassion for others, and his unwavering commitment to family, patients, and community. His life's work and example will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know him.
A memorial service will be held in his honor at 2 p.m. on October 4th at the St. Francis of Assisi Episcopal Church in Chapin, SC. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a veterans' organization or a youth sports program of your choice.
