

IRMO - James "Jim" Rabon, affectionately known as "Poppy," passed away on Sunday, March 2, 2025, in Irmo, South Carolina, at the age of 86. Born on February 6, 1939, in Columbia, South Carolina, he lived a life marked by dedication to his country, community, and family.
Jim proudly served in the United States Navy for 21 years, enlisting on February 6, 1957. As a Master Chief Machinist’s Mate (MMCS), he played a vital role in the Navy’s nuclear program. After completing nuclear school, he served aboard nuclear submarines and was part of the commissioning crew for several of them. His naval career also included service on the crew that commissioned several destroyers. Jim served during the Vietnam War before being honorably discharged on February 14, 1977.
Following his distinguished military career, Jim continued his commitment to service by working for the United States Postal Service for 27 years before retiring. His strong work ethic and dedication were evident throughout his professional life.
Jim was a devoted husband to his wife, Mary, of 66 years. He is also survived by his sister, Maxine Wagner (Eddie); daughters, Dawn Grogan (Jon), Kim Hudson (Tim), and Donna Gantt (Troy); grandchildren, Meghan Woodard (Judson), Michael Gantt (Krista), Taylor French (Joshua), Creighton Hudson (Jordan), Madison Mossell (Matthew), and Ally Corrigall (Sumner); great-grandchildren, Carter Woodard, Darby Woodard, Hadleigh French, Campbell French, Theodore Hudson, Emersyn French, Evan Gantt, Eloise Hudson, and Elliott Corrigall; Goddaughter, Paige Goff; God-grandson Leiden Goff; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Henry Rabon and Sarah Rabon Walters.
Pallbearers will be his grandsons Michael Gantt, Creighton Hudson, Judson Woodard, Joshua French, Matt Mossell, and Sumner Corrigall.
A man of faith, Jim was an active member of the Friendship Class at Riverland Hills Baptist Church. His presence within the church community was cherished by those who knew him.
A funeral service will be held at 12:00 noon on Wednesday, March 5, 2025, at Riverland Hills Baptist Church in Irmo, South Carolina. Visitation will take place at the church from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. prior to the service. A graveside service will take place at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 12, 2025 in Fort Jackson National Cemetery.
