

CHAPIN - Jan M. Overstreet went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, July 26, 2016, with his family by his side. He was born September 29, 1939 in Taft, Texas to the late Thomas B. and Dorothy S. Overstreet. He graduated high school in Garland, Texas and attended the University of Texas at Arlington, where he played basketball. He also served his country in the United States Army. He married Effie McCravy Overstreet in 1965 and they have resided at Lake Murray in Chapin.
Jan was a very active member at Lake Murray Presbyterian Church. He was a deacon, ordained elder, president of the Men of the Church, president of Bible Survey Sunday School Class, participated in five mission trips to Mexico, initiated the Friday morning Men’s Prayer Breakfast and many other activities of the church which include Habitat for Humanity, Good Works, the Hub, and We Care.
Jan loved the outdoors. He loved ocean cruises, activities on the lake, was a master gardener, and very passionate about playing golf. He was a member of Lexington Country Club where he enjoyed golfing with the seniors. He was also a member of Midlands Golf Association, and he developed many strong friendships with the golfers in these organizations.
In addition to his loving wife of fifty-one years, Jan is survived by two sons, Brent Overstreet of Helena, Montana and Scott Overstreet of Lexington, S.C.; two grandchildren, Kristopher Overstreet of Lexington, Devyn Overstreet Lovejoy (Justin) of League City, Texas; and two great-grandchildren, Peyton and Avery Lovejoy. He is also survived by his twin brother, Jon H. Overstreet (Sheri) of Post, Texas and two nephews, Todd Overstreet of Dallas, Texas and Brad Overstreet of Edina, Minnesota. He was predeceased by his parents and his sister, Lee Ontyne Overstreet. Jan was also predeceased by his favorite little playmate, his shih tzu named “Katie”.
A memorial service conducted by the Rev. Dr. Ben Sloan celebrating Jan’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 30, 2016, at Lake Murray Presbyterian Church, 2721 Dutch Fork Road (Highway 76), Chapin. The family will receive friends in the fellowship hall following the service.
The family expresses appreciation to Dr. Oscar Lovelace, Dr. Christopher Marshall and Dr. Thomas D’Amico (Duke Hospital) and their staff for the compassionate care provided by them during Jan’s courageous battle with cancer.
