
She attended and graduated from Columbia High School. In 1948, she met Robert E. Cook, Jr. They were married in March 1950. In October 1951, her daughter Brenda was born. In January 1958, her son Michael was born. She worked for the Employment Security Commission before the children were born. After that job, most of her time was occupied by caring for her children, husband
and her parents. After her children were grown and her father passed away, in 1979 she, Robert, and her mother moved to Ballentine, SC. She joined Salem United Methodist Church and was very involved and helped organize many activities.
Joyce was also very active in the community. She became a hospice volunteer and worked with Sharing Gods Love, a ministry that provides food, clothing, and financial assistance to those in need. She was a member of the American Legion in Lexington, SC. She also found time to go back to work for Dunbar Funeral Home in Irmo, SC. She left Dunbar to be able to care for her husband Robert who was very ill. He passed away in 2017. She cared for and loved helping others.
Surviving are her son, Robert Michael Cook (Gloria); daughter Brenda Joyce VanNorman (Rev David); grandchildren
Jeremy VanNorman (Paige) and Shannon Hoffman (Jason); great-grandchildren Jensen and Palmer VanNorman, Barlow and Delaney Hoffman.
A private viewing will be held on Sunday, January 18, 2026 at Dunbar Funeral Home in Irmo and afterwards the burial at Salem UMC cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Salem UMC, 1312 Salem Church Road, Irmo SC, 29063 or Sharing Gods Love, 147 Friarsgate Blvd, Irmo SC, 29063.
