

CHAPIN - Lilla Waldrop Scroggins, aged 98, passed peacefully Wednesday, December 30, 2020. She was happily married to Albert T. Scroggins, Jr. for 63 years. She and her husband loved to travel, dance and spend time with their family. She and her husband were known for their hospitality and loved entertaining family, friends and colleagues.
Mrs. Scroggins was described by friends and family as a southern lady, always willing to lend a hand or make a comforting casserole for someone in need.
Mrs. Scroggins was born in Goodwater, Alabama to Carey Theo Waldrop and Carrie Thomas Waldrop. She enjoyed sharing funny stories about her upbringing with four brothers and three sisters. She graduated from Alexander City High School and Perry Business College in Alabama and attended Mississippi College and Southern Illinois University. She was a kindergarten teacher.
A longtime member of Forest Lake Presbyterian Church, Lilla was active in many areas including being a Sunday School teacher, Treasurer and Secretary of Women of the Church, Circle Chairman, and Church Historian for 20 years. In 1979, she was awarded a life membership in Women of the Church. A volunteer for the American Heart Association, she was the recipient of the Director’s Achievement Award in 1976.
Mrs. Scroggins was a member of the University of South Carolina Women’s Club where she held offices in the Newcomers Club as well as the Women’s Club. She was also active in the USC Bridge and Hobby groups.
Lilla Scroggins is survived by daughters, Pamela S. Owings (Greg) of Chapin S.C. and Deborah S. Goodson of Cumming, Georgia; granddaughters, Christi Poissant (Adam), Erin Holland (Jason), Rachael G. Guice (Matthew) and Jesse G. Smith (Kevin); great-grandchildren, Peyton Taylor Holland, Riley Grace, Hadley and Holden Guice and Lilla Mae Smith.
Mrs. Scroggins will be laid to rest next to her beloved husband in Forest Lake Memorial Garden. A celebration of her life will be held at a later date to be announced by the family and Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel.
