Lorine Kay Burgess of Columbia, SC, beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away surrounded by love. She was a kind, strong, and fiercely independent woman whose life was defined by caregiving—both in her long nursing career and in the way she cared for her family and friends.
Born in Kingsbury, Texas, Lorine pursued her calling as a nurse by attending Shannon Nursing School. With a natural gift for compassion, she dedicated her life to helping others and did not retire until the age of 78.
Her faith and service to others were central to her life. Lorine was an active member of Northeast United Methodist Church, where she spent countless hours making prayer shawls for those in need. She also devoted her time and talents to crocheting tiny octopi for premature babies in the NICU, small but powerful acts of love that brought comfort to families during their hardest days. Everyone who met her was touched by her kindness, strength, and giving spirit.
She was the best mother and friend anyone could ask for, offering guidance, laughter, and unconditional love to all who knew her.
Lorine is survived by her children, Nathan Burgess (Ruthann), Philip Burgess, and Carmen Burgess (Harold). She was the proud grandmother of Dylan Holien (Anne), Meghan Burgess Harvey (Charles), Anna Burgess, and Bridget Wilson. Her heart was full of joy at the arrival of her great-granddaughter, Amelia Holien, and she eagerly awaited the births of her sweet baby angels, Baby Girl Harvey and Baby Boy Holien.
She was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Carl Hugh Burgess, with whom she shared a life of love and partnership.
Lorine’s legacy is one of strength, faith, love, and fierce devotion to family. Her memory will live on in the countless lives she touched, both inside and outside of her profession.
Private family services will be held.
Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel, is assisting the family.
