Mary was born April 20, 1931 to Hughie Oscar Morris and Annie Marie Browder Morris in Andrews, SC. She was the second oldest daughter in a large family. She worked hard to help her parents on the farm and watch after her siblings. Mary continued to cherish her hometown of Andrews and Piney Forest Baptist Church even after she moved to Columbia in 1949. She came to Columbia to attend Columbia Business School and there she met Adrian, whom she was married to for over 50 years prior to his death in 2004. They were married April 17, 1951 and had 4 children. For the majority of her life, she was a homemaker and took care of her children and then her grandchildren. Her two older grandsons called her “Grandma,” and the younger grandkids referred to her as “Nan”.
Mary was a member of First Baptist Church of Columbia since the 1950’s. She enjoyed being a part of the Joy of Living Sunday School Class and had many good friends in the church. Mary loved working in her yard and had many beautiful flowers which her friends and family would love to come and see. She loved going on trips with friends and her dear neighbors, Carolyn and DeeDee Dukes. She loved the beach, the lake, and camping with her sisters, Tootsie and Joann and all the kids at Lakewood Campground. She loved dancing and enjoyed many Friday night dances at the Senior Center. Mary loved a good cup of coffee and sharing a good meal with friends. She was the “Rock” to her family and dearly loved her children, eight grandkids, and her two great-granddaughters.
She is survived by her daughters, Sarah Hancock Perdue (Ernie) and Melissa Wright Wheeler (Dave) and her sons, W. Roger Hancock (Jo) and David Hancock Sr.; 8 grandchildren, Kris Perdue, Lee Perdue (Tamara), Lauren Wright Armfield (McSwain), Bethany Hancock, Hugh Hancock (Brittany), David Michael Hancock Jr., Cole Hancock and Annie Wright; 2 great-granddaughters, Leeah Marie Perdue and Elsie Ann Hancock; her brother, J.B. Morris; and her sister and brother-in-law, Margie “Tootsie” and Steve Brown; her sisters-in-law, Gail Morris and Joan Morris; extended family members, Doug Wright, Sonya Hancock and Celeste Haigwood; and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents; her husband; six brothers, Oscar Morris, Thomas Morris, Marvin Morris, David Morris, Walker Morris, R.C. Morris; and two sisters, Rossie Morris and Joann Mixon.
We would like to say a special thank you to Shelby Rose who helped to care for Mary in her last two years of life and for the medical staff at Prisma Baptist that cared for her many times over the past four years.
