CWO 3 Nicolas York Monjo (age 97) son of Ferdinand and Bertha Monjo, loving husband of Brigitte Monjo and father to Garry Monjo passed away at his home in Chapin, SC on December 15, 2022. He is survived by his wife of 64 years Brigitte, son Garry, daughter-in-law Martha and granddaughter Cameron Joye, all living in South Carolina. He is predeceased by both of his parents and his three sisters Barbara Anderson, Patricia Duckett, and Isabel Nay.
"Nic" had a life of service to his country and one of helping his neighbors and friends. He served with distinction in the United States Army for 20 years, receiving several medals including the Bronze Star. His overseas assignments included service on Leyte Island and New Guinea in the Pacific Ocean during World War II, and as a US Army Criminal Investigator in post-war Kyoto and Tokyo Japan, as well as in Berlin, Germany. Within the United States his assignments took him throughout the country from Washington State to the Washington DC area.
We will never forget his many anecdotes about his time in the Army including one where he was tasked by General MacArthur to find a particular car registration document in a warehouse full of thousands of registrations individually rolled up, tied and randomly tossed about, or his very serious negotiations with Japanese officials held by candle light, with shots of Sake throughout the meeting; following Japanese tradition.
Following Nic's military career he worked as a Director of Security of a major department store chain. And, in his spare time helped found the all volunteer "Bowie (Md.) Craftsmen Association" where he helped many friends and neighbors with whatever projects and handiwork that needed attention. He was a strong believer in "do it right" and "measure twice and cut once."
Nic will be deeply missed by his family and friends including his very special friends Bruce and April Baggett of St. Augustine, Florida.
A graveside service will be held at the Fort Jackson National Cemetery on Wednesday, January 4, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Wounded Warriors Project, P.O. Box 758516, Topeka, Kansas 66675.
