Richard "Dick" Morgan Ames

Funeral service for Richard Morgan “Dick” Ames, 83, will be held at 12:00 noon on Friday, June 13, 2014 at The Episcopal Church of St. Simon & St. Jude, Irmo. Graveside service will follow at 2:00 p.m. in Ft. Jackson National Cemetery, 4170 Percival Rd., Columbia, SC. Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 12, 2014 from 7:00 to 9:00 pm at the Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel. Dick passed away Monday, June 9, 2014. He will be greatly missed by his family members including his wife Sandra Kay Smith Ames; sons, Doug Ames, Jim Ames, Ken Ames; daughters, Susan Waugh, Illa Moore, Lou Ann Jinks; nineteen grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; Floyd and Myra Ames, his nine brothers and sisters, his first wife, Georgia Estelle Smith Ames, and his oldest son, Ron Ames. Dick Ames was born September 27, 1930 in Binghamton, NY. Following high school, he enlisted in the Navy where he served on the flagship USS St. Paul and was involved in the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He also worked at the Pentagon in Washington, DC and many Naval Stations in Virginia and California. He did a world cruise aboard the USS Hancock and lived in Kodiak, Alaska. He retired from the Navy as a Chief Petty Officer after serving 20 years. Following his Navy retirement, he relocated to Valley, Alabama. Later in his career, he managed Brunswick Bowling Centers and built and managed Anchor Lanes in Irmo and was elected to the Greater Columbia Bowler's Hall of Fame. He was a former member of the Vestry of St. John's Episcopal Church in West Point, Georgia and most recently a member of The Episcopal Church of St. Simon & St. Jude.
