COLUMBIA - Sonia G. Janik, 96, devoted wife, mother and grandmother, passed away Wednesday, January 11, 2017, in the hospital following illness and complications from pneumonia. Mrs. Janik was a long time member of Our Lady of the Hills Catholic Church, where a Memorial Mass will be held in March 2017. Mrs. Janik chose cremation. Dunbar Funeral Home, Irmo, is assisting the family. Mrs. Janik was born March 19, 1920, near Johnstown, Penn., a daughter of Frank and Antoinette (Janasz) Zack. She lived in Youngstown, Ohio, from early childhood until retirement, when she moved to Columbia, which she loved and considered "home", having resided for 41 years. She enjoyed travel, cooking/baking, reading, walking, hosting her friends in her home for their monthly Bridge Club luncheons, often attending performances at Township Auditorium, and serving on the bereavement committee at church. She took great pride in everything she did, especially caring for her family. Those who knew her enjoyed her quick wit. Surviving are her daughter, Roberta Naples (Dr. Joseph) of Houston, Texas; sons, Leo M. Janik, Jr. (Cheryl) of Marblehead, Ohio, Dr. Richard Janik of Hawaii, Atty. Kenneth Janik of Columbia; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leo M. Janik, Sr. and her siblings. The family wishes to thank Harbor Chase of Columbia for the fine care given to Mrs. Janik this past year. Also, they would like to thank cousins, Mr. and Mrs. John Marks for their loving support, and Dr. and Mrs. Wayne Scott and Ms. Jean Perna, dear, caring friends and neighbors for many years.
