Born on June 2, 1958, in Columbia, Billy was a son of William Charlton Lynch, Jr. and Mae Lynch Crouch, both of whom preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Paula; his brother, Thomas Stephen (Steve) Lynch and his wife, Bonnie; and nephews and nieces.
Modest, upstanding, and kind-hearted, Billy was a Christian and member of Gateway Baptist Church.
Billy graduated from Irmo High School in 1976 and received his bachelor of science degree in accounting in 1980 from the University of South Carolina, where he was a member of Chi Psi social fraternity. He earned his license as a certified public accountant and began a career that spanned 39 years. He landed his first job with the accounting firm of Elliott Davis in Greenwood, South Carolina. A stint on the audit side of Clarkson, Harden, and Gantt, CPAs in Columbia, followed, before he went on to become the comptroller of Crown Metro Industries in Greenville. He returned to Columbia to serve as the chief financial officer of G & P Trucking until his retirement in 2019.
An avid sportsman who played football and baseball, he developed an abiding love for tennis that withstood the Parkinson’s disease and leukemia that he battled. Even on the Saturday before his death, Billy hit tennis balls with his best friend since first grade, Al Sellers. He also enjoyed snow skiing and water skiing and faithfully followed Gamecock football.
An intelligent man with a quick wit and dry sense of humor, Billy loved his family, which included his and Paula’s Springer Spaniels. He also enjoyed spending time at Edisto Beach and playing the drums, which he learned to do by taking lessons from a professional drummer. Billy was a generous and giving man, whether volunteering with Sharing God’s Love—a local cooperative ministry that works with individuals and families in crisis—or frying turkeys at Thanksgiving for friends in the neighborhood where he and Paula lived.
Billy was a self-professed chocoholic who possessed the uncanny gift of discovering delicious new flavors of ice cream, which he introduced to grateful friends and family. When it came to grilling steaks, he was a chef par excellence.
