Mother Mattie Ashe was born on April 18, 1939, in Hendersonville, South Carolina to the late Roosevelt Levant and Ruth Thompson. She passed away on April 15, 2022, at the age of 82. Mother Mattie graduated from Colleton High School in Walterboro, SC. After graduating she moved to Baltimore, MD where she attended Coppin State University and worked in the Baltimore School System as a teacher assistant and librarian. Mother Mattie loved serving and praising the Lord. She attended St. John Bibleway Church under the leadership of Pastor John Ruger and received the Holy Ghost at an early age. After graduating high school, Mother Mattie moved to Baltimore, Maryland. She attended Gospel Tabernacle under the leadership of her uncle the late Bishop George G. Levant, where she served faithfully in the kitchen ministry, secretary and sang on the Senior Choir. In 1960 she married the late Elder George Herbert Theron Ashe. After the passing of her husband, Mother Mattie moved to Jackson Michigan. She was a devoted member at Noah’s Ark Apostolic Church for 32 years under the leadership of her brother, Bishop Oscar P. Walters. She was a Licensed Missionary and served as Mothers Board President, Teacher and Pastor’s Aide President and Sunday School Teacher. Mother Mattie loved the Lord and enjoyed attending church. She would sing one of her favorite songs, “What a mighty God we serve” or say her favorite saying, “When I think of the goodness of Jesus and all He has done for me, my soul, my soul, my soul cries out hallelujah, I thank God for saving me.” She would then testify of just how good God had been, ball her fist, wind her arm and start moving backwards, praising her God that had been so good. She was faithful until she could no longer make it to Church. Mother Mattie enjoyed cooking
and could really cook. Her holiday meals were her signature; complete and prepared with time and love. There were always an assortment of homemade cakes and abundance of sweet potato pies ready to eat and/or carried home. She had a kind heart and loved caring for children. Her upbeat spirit matched her smile and it coupled with her giggly laughter which always brought smiles to the faces of those with whom she spoke. Her extremely devoted and caring children; daughter, Patricia; son Kenneth and grandson Maurice took great care of her until she departed. Her mother’s words to her, “You’re a great daughter”.
