Thomas Herman Slater was born in Detroit in late September 1934 to Betty and Herman Slater. He grew up in St. Clair Shores surrounded by his parents, a younger brother and sister and his beloved Granny. He graduated from Lake Shore High School and joined the Army where he played tennis and was introduced to the wonders of dentistry. While stationed in Colorado, Tom met his first wife with whom he had one child, Katherine. Tom graduated from the School of Dentistry at the University of Michigan in 1966 and opened an office in Grass Lake before settling on Jackson where he practiced dentistry until Independence Day 2011. He bought his beloved and ready-for-the-wrecking-ball home in 1976 and lovingly restored and tended it for the next 40 years. Tom was a busy man--busy living a vibrant life filled with world travel, bicycling adventures, photography, scuba diving, trains, planes and ever on the hunt for the perfect antique. He loved his brother and sister, his daughter, his two grandsons, his cousins and his dear Lillian. He was a member of the Jackson Optimist Club, Jackson First Presbyterian Church and the Jackson Radio Control Club. He leaves behind many beloved friends, tickets to events he so wanted to attend as well as several unfinished projects, and is watching to see which ones we will take up in his stead. Tom is survived by his brother Doug Slater (Linda), his sister Sue Tate (Tim), his daughter Katherine Morland (Tim) and grandsons Sam and Aaron Morland. Tom’s service will be held at Jackson First Presbyterian Church (743 W Michigan Ave) on Thursday December 14, 2017 at 11:00 AM; viewing at 10:00 AM. Private interment will be at Cadillac Memorial Garden East in Clinton Township. Remembrances may be made to either the Jackson Optimist Club or Jackson First Presbyterian Church.
