Alma Nell Webster, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 26th, 2025 at the age of 84 years old. She was known for her caring nature and her unwavering belief in honesty, integrity and family. Nell was affectionately described as “spunky” for her direct approach and saying what was on her mind.
She was born on April 23rd, 1940 to Albert and Myrtle Toney in Altoona, Alabama; and was the 10th of twelve siblings, with six sisters and five brothers. She is survived by her son, daughter, three grandchildren, three sisters and one brother.
Nell grew up on a farm nestled in the mountains of Alabama, where she enjoyed the adventures of the land but also endured the struggles of farm life, from picking cotton, to walking three miles to school and to the local store, in all kinds of weather. Most importantly, she was supported by her loving family.
After graduation from Walnut Grove High School, Nell’s early career began at Southern Bell Telephone Company in Birmingham, Alabama. Later she moved to St. Petersburg, Florida where she married her first husband and had two children, Darryn and Carryn. After her divorce, she started working for Allen Drug, a pharmaceutical company, where she met her future husband Robert “Bob” Webster. They were married on June 12th, 1971, and shared a loving marriage for 50 years until Bob’s passing in 2021.
Later in Nell’s career she focused on helping others through her work with Meals on Wheels. After her retirement, when she and Bob moved to Ocklawaha, she finished her career working with Young Life, a youth ministry program.
A woman of many passions, Nell loved gardening, cooking, quilting, bird watching and, of course bingo. Whether in large or small spaces, Nell always had a garden and would can her vegetables and fruits. She had a natural gift for nurturing plants and always had several pots of flowers nearby. She was also known for her good cooking which was enjoyed by many. At her assisted living community, she was known for the SNL (Saturday Night Live) Bingo where she earned the nickname “Bingo Alma”.
Nell loved her family. Despite the distance between them, she maintained close relationships with her siblings through regular letters and phone calls. Every August, the Toney family would gather from across the country for their annual family reunion, a tradition filled with laughter, delicious Southern food, and cherished memories. One year, they made it in the newspaper for having five generations in attendance. Nell was especially proud of her grandkids, Kacie, Parker and Piper and showed her love through home-cooked meals, baking, sewing things for them and little gifts. She also loved her animals, especially her dogs, Sir Lancelot, Tyler and Tillie.
Nell’s faith was an important part of her life. She was deeply involved in the Methodist Church throughout the years, and her strong belief in God sustained her. When the time came, she said she was ready to see Bob and go home to be with God.
