Born on November 25, 1954, in Wilmington, Delaware, Debbie was the daughter of Robert and Betty Shockley. After earning her Bachelor's of Science Degree in Nursing at the University of Delaware, she worked as a nurse for a few years before moving to Little Rock, Arkansas, where she earned her Master's of Science in Nursing from the University of Arkansas. She went on to dedicate her life to caring for others. After working as a nurse for many years, she realized she had a passion and a talent for education. She then taught nursing at FCCJ, where she guided and inspired future generations of nurses with her knowledge and compassion. Later, she transitioned back to the hospital setting as a nurse educator, continuing her unwavering commitment to the profession.
She started a family and raised her children in Fernandina Beach, FL, where they lived in a beautiful home overlooking Egan's Creek, a place that became the backdrop for countless memories.
Debbie was known for her deep love of animals, especially dogs. Over the years, she welcomed numerous strays into her home, providing them with lots of love, dog park visits, and gourmet meals. She was also known for her sense of humor. She could make light of any situation and always had hilarious facial expressions to go with it.
Debbie is survived by her two children, Jessica Durkin (Marty Durkin) and Joe Stubits (Danielle Stubits); her four cherished grandchildren, Conor, Cooper, Rowan, and Jordan; her mother, Betty Shockley; and her siblings, Bill Shockley, Kenny Shockley, and Val Hahn. She was preceded in death by her father, Robert Shockley.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Jacksonville Humane Society to honor Debbie’s lifelong love of rescue animals.
