Fred William Wienbarg Jr, 87, died peacefully in hospice care on Tuesday evening, September 30th. Born in Jacksonville, Florida in 1937, Fred attended Landon High School where he excelled in math and was afforded the opportunity to later attend ‘The Citadel’ in South Carolina where he earned his degree. Following his graduation, he enjoyed a distinguished career as an Eastern Airline Captain, and later he became self-employed producing custom countertops which was really just a great excuse to play in a high-tech workshop!
Well-known for his ingenuity, Fred was master wood craftsman, fly fisherman/fly-tyer, stained glass artist, gentleman farmer, soap maker, bread baker, moonshine distiller, quilter and embroider. Anyone who knew Fred also knew if it could be made, he would make it - and personalize it for you!
Fred was a sportsman who loved the outdoors. He enjoyed fishing and golf with his sons and his friends. His career in aviation made him quite skilled in nautical navigation. He enjoyed sailing and boating for many years traveling with his wife, Suzanne. He was a Gator football fan and a Jaguar!
He was a great host and barbecue aficionado. He loved nothing better than having friends and family over for a banquet feast or an oyster roast. He never met a stranger and made friends easily.
Survivors include Fred’s wife, Suzanne Wienbarg, his beloved dog “Lucy,” sons Keith Wienbarg (wife Jennifer) of Ponte Vedra and Mark Wienbarg (wife Lori) of Mundelein, Illinois. Suzanne’s daughters Jennifer Fortune (husband Scott) of Atlantic Beach, Julie Dowling (husband Steven) of San Francisco, and Leslie Dowling (husband Carlo) of Princeton, New Jersey. Grandchildren Ashleigh, Katelyn, William “Will”, and Carolyn “CJ”. Great grandchildren Henry, Wyatt, and Finley.
Fred requested a cremation at Beaches Chapel by Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home (904-249-2374), 1701 Beach Blvd, Jacksonville Beach. A remembrance will be held by his family at a later date. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made either to Florida Hospice or The Humane Society.
