

Jerome Boyd “Jerry” Hallan passed away at the age of 90 on December 26, 2024, in Jacksonville, Florida. He was born on March 8, 1934, in Hettinger, ND, to James and Blenda Hallan and had lived in Jacksonville since 1989.
Jerry had a distinguished career in public health and academia. He attended North Dakota State University, Johns Hopkins University, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he earned multiple degrees, including a Dr. P.H. in Health Care Administration. He held professorial and administrative positions at Appalachian State University, Oregon State University, and the University of North Florida, where he retired as a Professor of Health Administration.
In addition to his academic achievements, Jerry was a talented sculptor known for his unique wood sculpting techniques. His works included whimsical depictions of humans and animals, and he exhibited in various juried shows across North Carolina, Oregon, and Florida. His piece, “Hacker” won Best in Show at the St. Augustine Art Association’s “Cutting Edge Show.”
Jerry served in the U.S. Army as a Medical Laboratory Technician and was part of the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps until the time of his death. He was also actively involved in community programs and held leadership positions in several organizations. He established an art gallery at Christ Episcopal Church in Ponte Vedra, Florida, where parishioners and residents exhibit their artwork.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Ilsa Prinz Hallan, children, Jay Hallan (Evelyn), Brett Hallan (Lisa), Kiri Lucas (Al Howard), all of Durham, NC, Kyle Creason (Maria) of Burlington, VT, and Jennifer Creason of Colorado. Also surviving him are his sister, Marlene Howell of Phoenix, AZ, nine grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents and one brother, Duane Hallan.
Jerry’s contributions to the greater good in the areas of public health, education, and the arts will be remembered by all who knew him.
A Celebration of Jerry’s Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 24, 2025, at Christ Episcopal Church in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. In lieu of flowers, gifts to Christ Episcopal Church, 400 San Juan Dr., Ponte Vedra Beach, FL 32082 are appreciated.
